The Northern Football Netball League and AFL South East will lock horns in a senior women’s representative match on Saturday May 19.

In an historic first for both leagues, the NFNL’s best women’s footballers will combine to take on their counterparts from AFL South East – which includes clubs from the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League – at Preston City Oval.

The match will be played ahead of the senior men’s match in the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship, where the winner wins a spot in the top-ranked game in 2019.

The addition of the senior women’s match makes for a massive triple-header of interleague football – with an under-19 men’s game to kick-off proceedings on the day.

NFNL Chief Executive Officer Peter McDougall said he was delighted to announce the league’s first foray into senior women’s representative football.

“This is a great opportunity for the best women’s players from both leagues to showcase their talent on the representative stage,” McDougall said.

“With the success of last season’s inaugural NFNL Women’s competitions we are looking forward to putting together a talented squad for this historic game.”

AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson was also delighted about the prospect of senior women’s representative football making its debut on the calendar.

“The prospect of women footballers proudly representing their league is genuinely exciting and a great opportunity to share in the long and proud history of interleague football,” Anderson said.

“We look forward to a great day of competition against Northern on May 19.”

The NFNL is currently in the process of appointing a coach, with an announcement of a training squad to follow.
